Today we worked with prefixes and suffixes. The student teacher actually lead the first two lessons. They started playing a game of musical chairs except they had to match their root word with a prefix or suffix. It was a lot of fun. Some of the kids made up fake words and it was funny to see all the different funny words. Apparently their is a huge wrestling craze going on because the lesson involved John Cena (a professional wrestler) and his power house suffixes and prefixes. It was fun to see the kids run around the room and scramble to match root words with prefixes and suffixes. I am just starting to learn the kids names and the kids are becoming more familiar with me in the classroom. however, I sort of feel a disconnect with my involvement in the classroom. I emailed my teacher and asked her if I could participate more or some suggestions on how I should be participating. Its challenging because there is a student teacher in the room, so you have 3 people all trying to get the kids involved with learning. I feel its best to step away sometimes and just observe.

Today was a very interesting day. I mostly observed and shadowed the kids. In middle school it's a lot different from the elementary school. Instead of group work it's mostly individual work and a lot of lecturing from the teacher. The times that they do work in groups are very limited (5-7 min). This is because they have class periods in middle school. The structure is very different. In elementary school you have one teacher all day. In middle school you have a variety of teachers and different strategies in which to learn. I also learned that, my English teacher (who is awesome) that i'm shadowing will teach the same English lesson to 3 or 4 groups of students a day. Its almost a repeated process of teaching the same lesson several times. The kids in Middle school have a lot of sass and a lot of attitude. But I love the teacher because she is also very sassy and doesn't put up with any funny business. my teacher is very outgoing and hopefully will be really fun to work with.
